Writer's Summit Tip #9:

Good book reviews are like gold - no matter who they're from, but they need to be managed wisely.

ONLY celebrity or highly credentialed reviewers go on the cover... Your most recognizable name goes on the front cover. Then if you have room on the back cover after the synopsis and abbreviated bio, put another review from a recognized source.

If you have 'reader's reviews' - they belong on your website, they deserve a blog entry recognizing their comments and commenting back, they can have a place inside your book in the first couple of pages, they definitely belong on amazon.com and bn.com and any other online book seller you are using. Amazon.com has taught us well that referrals are a great way to sell, so they highlight the reader's reviews and they really do wield buying power!

Another place to keep the reader's reviews is in front of you - pasted on your office walls. Keep these where you can see them and stay encouraged and inspired that your work is making a difference! It really does help - in many ways.

Portuguese Water Dog

These are a breed of water dog similar to poodles. They are a medium-sized breed with good temperaments. Reportedly, they are loyal dogs, good workers and great companions.

Portuguese Water Dogs are also hypoallergenic due to their waterproof coat. The Portugese water dog is a great choice of breed if anyone in the family is extra sensitive to such things.

According to the AKC, Portugese Water Dogs were originally bred to accompany fishermen on their boats. Due to their swimming ability, they could retrieve stuff out of the water like broken nets, etc.

Writer's Summit Tip #23:

If you are seeking out a commercial publisher, find out if they require you to be represented by a literary agent. Go on to the publisher's website and look for their submission guidelines.

Follow all submission guidelines very carefully. Your work won't get past the mail room interns if you haven't followed the submission guidelines. You'll receive a rejection letter and get all disappointed, but what they don't tell you is that you didn't even make it out of the mail room because you didn't follow directions!

As much as anything else, submission guidelines are a test on whether or not you are easy to work with - if you can follow simple directions or not.

If you ignore submission guidelines, publishers will ignore you...

Writer's Summit Tip #24:

NEVER ASK WHY...

your book was rejected for publication. The publisher won't tell you and it will drive you crazy if you try and second guess the reason.

Just know that a publisher will only accept a book for publication if it is EXACTLY the right fit for them at EXACTLY the right time. Everything else gets rejected.

Don't take it personally, it has nothing to do with you. It has to do with their bottom line.

One story, from an editor who felt bad about rejecting manuscripts without explaining goes like this:
"I was a young editor and I asked if I could write a note on the rejection slip so the author wouldn't feel bad about the reason I had to reject their manuscript. My boss said not to, but I did anyway. What I got back surprised me. Instead of making the authors feel better, sometimes I enraged them and they wrote back to me to tell me I was stupid not to see the merit of their work. Othertimes, they wrote back pleading with me to change my mind. In all cases, I opened up a conversation that was going to go nowhere. It always ended badly. I stopped writing to authors after the first few times. I wish authors could understand, it never was about them or the merits of their work, it only had to do with our current agenda.
